Teletext, first invented some 30 years ago, utilizes the “vertical blanking interval” lines that together form the dark band dividing pictures horizontally on the television screen. Technically it has remained almost unchanged until recently when TV became digital. The potential of Teletext as an tool for artistic expression has not yet been fully discovered though the aesthetics of Teletext have slowly creeped in to the most fashionable street ware, graffiti and fine art. Is the next big word in intellectual small talk of the hip, rich and famous going to be teletextualism? Time will show. Since it happens The International Teletext Art Festival gives the possibility to the ARD Text users to view some of the latest works on the Teletext scene and decide for them selves.

Der Teletext nutzt die vertikale Austastlücke bei der Fernsehübertragung, in der nur geringe Informationsbits übertragen werden können. Technisch blieb der Videotext in seiner über 30-jährigen Geschichte unverändert.

Nur sechs Farben plus weiss und schwarz sind möglich, die Grafik basiert auf Pixeln, das Bildformat ist festgelegt. Dennoch sind die Möglichkeiten, die der Teletext als künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel bietet, noch lange nicht ausgeschöpft.

Im Gegenteil: Künstler sind fasziniert von der Ästhetik der Pixel. Dabei schwingen auch Erinnerungen an erste Schritte in der digitalen Welt mit, an Computer, die heute als archaisch gelten, damals jedoch ein Tor zu einer neuen Welt aufstiessen, wie der Commodore 64. Elemente der

Teletext-Ästhetik finden sich derzeit an vielen Stellen, auf Hauswänden und in Graffitis, in Videos und Animationsfilmen, auf Webseiten im Internet. In der Beschränkung und dem Minimalismus des Teletextes liegt offenbar auch ein Reiz.

17 Künstlerinnen und Künstler haben für das Internationale Teletextkunstfestival ITAF Arbeiten erstellt. Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Juha van Ingen (FixC Cooperative). ITAF ist ein Projekt der FixC Cooperative. Die Arbeiten werden vom 16.08. bis 16.09.2012 im ARD Text auf Seite 770 und in der Galerie Pflüger68 (Pflügerstraße 68, 12047 Berlin) gezeigt.

ITAF - International Teletext Art Festival ARD Textissä + näyttely Pflüger68 galleriassa Berliinissä

Avajaisissa Jarkko Räsänen (FixC osuuskunta) soittaa Chiptune-musiikkia

ITAF on suomalaisen FixC taiteilijaosuuskunnan ja ARD Textin kanssa yhteistyönä toteuttama taidehanke, jossa 17 taiteilijan teokset ovat kuukauden ajan esillä ARD Textin Teksti-TV -sivuilla ja näyttelyssä Pflüger68 galleriassa, Berliinissä.

ARD on BBC:n jälkeen Euroopan suurin julkinen mediatalo ja ARD-textillä on päivittäin n. kaksi miljoonaa käyttäjää. ITAF ARD on Teksti-TV:n 30-vuotisen historian mittavin taidehanke.

Vaikka Teksti -TV:n retroestetiikka näkyy nykyään voimakkaasti visuaalisessa kulttuurissamme mm. animaatioelokuvissa, webbi-sivuilla, graffitissa ja graafisessa suunnittelussa, niin Teksti-TV:llä itsellään on vielä paljon annettavaa taiteellisen ilmaisun foorumina.

Teknisesti Teksti-TV on pysynyt miltei muuttumattomana 30-vuotisen historiansa aikana.

Jokainen sivu perustuu 40 x 24 -merkin ruudukkoon ja käytössä on kuusi mahdollista tausta- ja tekstiväriä (mustan ja valkoisen lisäksi) ja tekstiä tai kuvia voi korostaa vilkkumisefektillä.

Teosten toteuttaminen oli osallistuville taiteilijoille mielenkiintoinen haaste, koska Teksti TV-formaatti vaatii tekijältään erityisen editorin käyttöä, eikä esimerkiksi piirustusten, valokuvien ja videoiden siirto sellaisenaan onnistu Teksti-TV:hen. Taiteilijoiden ponnistelut palkittiin ja lopputuloksena saatiin hieno kokonaisuus useita eri tyylilajeja edustavia varta vasten tähän formaattiin tehtyjä uusia taideteoksia.
